DRIVER CERTIFICATE OF PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE (CPC)
CRH is approved by JAUPT as a Training Centre for the delivery of Driver CPC Periodic Training for both PCV and LGV drivers'.
Driver CPC affects all current and future drivers in different ways, a summary of the latest information can be found below:
New drivers acquiring PCV vocational entitlement (D, D+E, D1, D1+E licence) after the 10th September 2008 or LGV vocational entitlement (C, C+E, C1, C1+E) after the 10th September 2009 will have to obtain the initial Driver CPC in order to drive professionally.
The initial Driver CPC modules are shown below:
- Theory Test (Module 1) is split into two separate tests. The first part being 100 multiple choice questions and the second part being the hazard perception with 19 interactive clips.
- Driver CPC Case Studies Test (Module 2) is computer based. There are seven case study tests, each with between six and eight questions. The questions will be based on real life situations you may encounter in your working life as a professional driver.
- Practical Test (Module 3) takes place at the DSA practical test centre with most of the test being conducted on the public highway.
- Driver CPC Practical Demonstration Test (Module 4) takes place at the practical test centre and the examiner will test your knowledge in preparing for duty in a safe manner, ensuring your vehicle is fit for service. Inspection and use of equipment in conjunction with the Disability Discrimination Act and to show you can take measures to ensure that illegal immigrants or goods are prevented from being carried.
Both new and existing drivers must complete a total of 35 hours Periodic Training within the 5 years following their ‘acquired rights' or initial Driver CPC to keep their Driver CPC valid. This means on average each driver must undertake an approved training course of 7 hours (one day) each year.
Therefore PCV / LGV drivers exempt from the initial Driver CPC by acquired rights will still have to complete their periodic training of 35 hours every 5 years.

There are several Driver CPC exemptions associated with the Directive.
Exemptions listed are as follows:
- Vehicles with a maximum speed not exceeding 45kph
- Vehicles used by the armed forces, civil defence, and emergency services
- Vehicles undergoing road tests for technical development, repair or maintenance
- Vehicles used in states of emergency, vehicles used in the course of driving lessons or examinations
- Vehicles used for non-commercial carriage of passenger or goods - for personal use
- Vehicles used for carrying material of equipment to be used by the driver in the course of his or her work, providing that driving the vehicles is not the drivers' principle activity
